Quick reference
Gigabyte (GB) to Megabyte (MB)
How data size conversion works
Each step up in data units multiplies by 1,024 (binary): 1 KB = 1,024 B, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB, and so on.
1 GB = 1,024 MB = 1,048,576 KB = 1,073,741,824 B
This converter uses binary prefixes (powers of 1,024). Storage manufacturers often use decimal prefixes (powers of 1,000), so a "500 GB" drive may show as ~465 GB in your operating system.
Units in this category
The smallest addressable unit of data. Typically stores one character of text.
1,024 bytes. Enough for a short text document or small configuration file.
1,024 KB. Enough for a high-resolution photo or a few minutes of compressed audio.
1,024 MB. Enough for about 250 songs or a short HD video.
1,024 GB. Common capacity for external hard drives and cloud storage plans.
1,024 TB. Used for large-scale data centers and enterprise storage systems.
