How data size conversion works

Each step up in data units multiplies by 1,024 (binary): 1 KB = 1,024 B, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB, and so on.

This converter uses binary prefixes (powers of 1,024). Storage manufacturers often use decimal prefixes (powers of 1,000), so a "500 GB" drive may show as ~465 GB in your operating system.

Why does my hard drive show less space than advertised?

Storage manufacturers use decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) while operating systems use binary (1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). A "500 GB" drive holds about 465 GiB in binary.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB (megabyte) can mean either 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes depending on context. MiB (mebibyte) always means 1,048,576 bytes (binary). This converter uses binary values.
