PNG to JPG Without Black Background

Fix the most common PNG to JPG conversion problem

The problem

When converting PNG to JPG, transparent areas often turn black. This happens because JPG doesn't support transparency, so the converter needs to fill those areas with a solid color. Many tools default to black.

  • × Logos on transparent backgrounds — end up on a black rectangle
  • × Product photos with cutout backgrounds — black fills the empty space
  • × Icons and graphics — transparent padding becomes a dark border

The fix

Our converter fills transparent areas with white by default, not black. You can also choose any background color using the color picker in the settings panel.

  1. 1. Go to the PNG to JPG converter
  2. 2. Drop your PNG files
  3. 3. Open the background color setting
  4. 4. Pick your preferred color (white is the default)
  5. 5. Download your JPG files with the correct background

Why does this happen?

PNG stores transparency as an alpha channel. Each pixel has an opacity value — 0 means fully transparent, 255 means fully opaque. Pixels can also be anywhere in between for semi-transparent effects like shadows and gradients.

JPG has no alpha channel. When converting from PNG to JPG, every transparent pixel needs a solid color to replace it. If the converter doesn't handle this explicitly, the default is often black (RGB 0,0,0) because that's what an empty color value looks like in most image processing systems.

A good converter fills transparent areas with a specified color before encoding to JPG. Ours defaults to white and lets you pick any color you need.

Tips

  • Partial transparency blends — If your PNG has semi-transparent shadows or gradients, the background color blends with those areas. White works well for most images.
  • Match your display context — Use a background color that matches where you'll display the image. White for documents, light gray for websites, or any brand color you need.
  • Need to keep transparency? — JPG will never support it. Convert to WebP instead, or stay with PNG.
